The Ecobike Brand

Ecobike is a great example of how timing can be crucial to success. The brand has been around since 2008 — our first encounter with their bikes was in 2015, when e-bikes were just starting to catch on locally. Even back then, Ecobike offered a complete line of electric bikes that delivered great value for the price. Today, the company is considered one of Poland’s leading e-bike brands.

Ecobike specializes in practical and recreational electric bikes at competitive prices. All design, assembly, and quality control are done in-house in Poland, even though components are sourced from Asia.

X-Cross Models Review

Let’s dive into the core of this article — the test of two X-Cross trekking e-bikes. Both came in different frame versions and were tested extensively during spring rides. Here’s a breakdown of the key features and who these bikes are best suited for.

Riding Position and Comfort

The X-Cross models offer an upright and relaxed seating position — exactly what you expect from a trekking-style bike. Comfort is further enhanced by an adjustable stem, ergonomic handlebars, a suspension seat post, and a 63 mm SunTour NEX-E25 front suspension fork. While not the stiffest for aggressive riding, these components are well-suited for urban and light off-road use.

Versatility

Equipped with 47 mm Schwalbe Energizer Plus tires, the X-Cross bikes are ready for both road and light trail use. These e-bike-specific tires offer durability and grip while maintaining comfort. The combination of suspension, tire width, and upright geometry makes these bikes extremely versatile for city commuting and recreational adventures.

Utility Features

Both models come with full fenders, a sturdy rear rack, kickstand, and lighting system. The rear rack is directly mounted to the frame and can handle loads up to 25 kg. The Spanninga lights are powered by the central battery and controlled from the handlebar.

Utility Features

Frame Design

The X-Cross uses an aluminum frame with a neatly integrated battery in the down tube — making it look sleek and helping centralize weight. The frame is compatible with disc brakes and available in a single size: 20" for men and 17" or 19" for women.

Assistance System

The X-Cross is built to deliver value without sacrificing functionality. It comes with a choice of 522 Wh or 630 Wh LG-cell lithium-ion batteries. On standard 522 Wh models, expect 90–130 km of range in lower assist modes. There are 5 assist levels, and battery life is rated for 700 charge cycles.

Power is delivered by a 45 Nm Bafang rear hub motor. While it has a slight lag compared to mid-drive units, it performs well in everyday use and offers surprising torque at higher assist levels. The LCD display is large, bright, and easy to read in sunlight. It provides essential ride data and is controlled via a handlebar-mounted button unit.

Drivetrain and Brakes

The X-Cross uses a 1x9 Shimano Alivio drivetrain — reliable and appropriate for recreational riding. Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes round out the build, offering solid stopping power for a heavier e-bike.

Real-World Riding Impressions

The X-Cross models excel in practicality and comfort, ideal for riders using their bike for daily transport and leisure. They are stable, easy to handle, and surprisingly nimble given their ~25.5–26 kg weight. Motor assist effectively cancels out the weight while riding. Just make sure you have a place to store it — carrying up stairs is not ideal.

Handling and Comfort

Conclusion

Ecobike delivers on its promise of creating e-bikes for the average rider. At €2099, the X-Cross offers excellent value thanks to its frame integration, solid spec, and all-around usability. While basic in many ways, it nails the essentials: responsive assist, wide tires, solid drivetrain, and reliable brakes. If you’re looking for an all-purpose e-bike that’s fun, functional, and affordable, the X-Cross is a great choice.
